1. From photobiomodulation science to dental clinical practice

Transferring mechanism knowledge into dental clinical language

This chapter does not repeat the Advanced Clinical Module. It converts mechanisms you already studied into the clinical vocabulary of dentistry: which tissue, which objective, which decision.

Biological rationale

PBM modulates mitochondrial activity and redox signalling, which downstream influences inflammatory mediators, nociceptive signalling, angiogenesis, proliferation and repair. Each of those downstream effects becomes a different clinical objective in a different dental tissue.

Clinical objectives

  • Distinguish PBM from photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Key concept
PBM versus PDT

PBM uses light to modulate cellular function without a photosensitiser. PDT uses light plus a photosensitiser to produce a cytotoxic effect. They are different interventions with different objectives, safety profiles and consent implications.
